The first shining force is a little clunky to play, you have to enter a menu and select "talk" to talk to people There was a GBA release that may have addressed this, but I haven't played it , but the rest of the games are all SO GOOD.

I'm currently in the middle of playing Shining Force 3 for the millionth time. Also, Fire Emblem is trash. B4mv Member.
Nov 2, 1, Can't speak for the others. If you like retro rpgs, definitely worth playing now. Oct 27, 9, Yes, definitely. But I get this suspicious feeling my opinions are biased While that is true that the core gameplay is simpler, the scenario design is the secret MVP of the Shining Force games. I played through Shining Force 1 last year and battles like the Carnival and the Laser Eye battle are still so incredible.
I don't think there are any battles in FE3H which is a game I deeply love that reach those levels of creativity and fun. It is still a fun game to play in and there are still lessons to learn from this game all those years later. TheKeipatzy Member.
Oct 30, California for now. Yes yes. One of my favorites. Oct 27, I happen to love Shining the Holy Ark. All of the Shining Force games are excellent. And as great as Shining Force 3 is, the battles took longer due to longer transitions loading for attack animations. For that reason, and because it's characters were more memorable for me, I think Shining force 2 is the best of that bunch.
Overall, Shining in the Darkness is a pretty standard dungeon crawler, with a lot of grinding, mapping, etc. The one thing it has going for it is it still maintains Shining's unique art style and music. But if you had to skip one of the games, it might be this one. But maybe at least give it 1 hour? IrishNinja Member. Oct 27, 4, Vice City.
Oreiller Member. Oct 25, 3, Shining Force 1 is still pretty neat. Haven't played 2 or 3 though. Shining in the Darkness is a decent dungeon crawler but it's not a must play or anything, you can safely skip unless you're curious about it. Shining in the Darkness is considered by many gaming historians to be a pioneer of Japanese console RPGs, especially in Europe, which would not see a Final Fantasy game until more than six years after the Darkness made its mark in the region.
The second game in the Shining series, Shining Force , diverged greatly in gameplay; however, many stylistic parts are reminiscent of Shining in the Darkness , including music and art. Other features such as the distinctive menu system, the use of priests for saving games and resurrecting characters, and several magic spells that would continue to be used in every game in the series up to and including Shining Force III , with the notable exception of Shining Wisdom.
These games also all share story continuity, even Wisdom. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Sega Pro 1. November Retrieved 29 January CBS Interactive.
