  1. Cover Girl, Shawn Colvin's third full-length album, was released in on Columbia Records. Colvin is a singer-songwriter who usually records her own material, however, as the title alludes to, all of the tracks on the album are covers of previously recorded songs. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Columbia.
  2. I like Shawn Colvin's music a lot, but much prefer just her with her guitar. It's really about personal taste. I consider this album, like others in the top 40 arena, unnecessarily over-produced. Others won't agree. I much prefer her "Uncovered" album and her "Live 88" album. I listen to those 2 /5(44).

  7. When Shawn Colvin first turned up playing Greenwich Village folk clubs in the early s, she used to perform a variety of cover songs, often taking rock recordings and re-imagining them for her girl-with-guitar format. When Colvin began recording in the late '80s, however, she concentrated on her own original material. Cover Girl brings her interpretive abilities back into focus.
  8. Unfortunately, Cover Girl acquiesces to Colvin's sweeter side and ultimately feels like the result of a record-company suggestion; it's poised more as a breakthrough album than another leg on an artistic journey. Releasing a Police cover as a single to sell Shawn Colvin seems a compromise, an uninspired, even calculated move to repackage a hit.
